When Linda first found out she was pregnant for a second time Nicolas wasn’t too thrilled on the idea of becoming a parent again. The timing wasn’t right, and his investment business was just about to take off. He was traveling all the time, and the idea of having another kid was out of his picture. He couldn’t be there for the child if he needed him there, and with Linda’s work load both weren’t ready. The idea of adoption came up on the couples mind, at first. It was until Linda’s third month that she found herself unable to let go of the child she had growing. She was able to talk Nicolas into keeping the child. Even though he was against it, he gave in to Linda. As months went on Nicolas found himself with swamped at work, but surprised to find himself excited about this new child that was on its way. On August 27th, 1986 Matthew Nathaniel Hale was born at 3:30am at Philadelphia Children's Hospital.
Through Matthew’s childhood, Nicholas found it hard to be around to help raise the child. Within the first six months, Hale Inc. finally became one of Philly’s top ten investment firms. This forcing Nicholas to travel all over the world to make investment deals. Nicholas’s absence would eventually put a huge strain on his and Matt’s relationship. Matt found himself fighting for his dad’s attention which would eventually grow into causing trouble and acting out in school to get his father’s attention. While Nicholas was home, he and Linda would spend most of their time planning holiday parties or parties as a business opportunity. By the time Matt was fifteen, Nicholas and Matt’s relationship had gone so far down the drain that both would fight constantly, and they were damaged. This hurt Linda, but by this time she had one of Philly’s top interior design firms and too found herself at the office a lot. This would also put a restrain on Matt and the rest of the family.
When Matt graduated from high school he went onto Temple University where he majored as an architect drafter. College is when he first met his first girlfriend. She was what he was looking for at the time. She was sassy and she loved to party as much as he did. They managed to get along majority of the relationship, but when they moved in together things started to fall apart towards the end. He ended up breaking up with her one morning over a coffee cup on the kitchen counter. Since his first girlfriend, Matt decided that he wasn’t going to do any more relationships, so he went back to his normal self which was sleeping around with random girls. It wasn’t until he met Jenny the summer of his senior year in college where everything changed.
Jenny would become Matt’s serious girlfriend, and she would be the first one that would teach him what love was really like. They dated up to when Matt went to Europe for a few months after graduating from Temple. He randomly called her one night on a bet and broke up with her over the phone while he was drunk. Since then their relationship had never been the same. Jenny would come back into his life off and on three times, and each time the two of them tried to work things out. The third time it was the last time Matt wanted to do the make up break up routine so he asked her to marry him. She accepted. The two of them got eloped in Virginia. Things were good for awhile until Matt went away on Brand’s bachelor weekend, and Jenny surprised him with the idea of leaving him. She had time to think on his vacation that maybe they had rushed things a little too fast, and she wasn’t ready to handle it. She ended up leaving Matt that weekend.
A week later, Matt was approached by Jenny’s lawyer for a mediator divorce. He signed the divorce papers a week later, and that night of the signing he was arrested for a DUI charge. Matt pleaded guilty and had his license restricted for three months and therapy sessions. During this time he’s found himself growing up, and realizing what is important to him. He had pending applications to grad school at UCLA, Cornell, Temple, The Catholic University of America, UPenn, and Columbia. Matt decided on going to Catholic University, and trying to live in a different city than Philadelphia. Leaving only a couple weeks ago, it is Matt's first time away from home. Thankfully he has his Uncle Rhett in DC to help him adjust and get him situated with a job as he waits for school to start. Plus Jenny also helped Matt make himself adjusted to the new location. He is also in the process of trying to fix his relationship with his dad.
